Thangal para trekking
Thangal para is one among the major attraction Near Vagamon In Kottayam Idukki border. Thangal para stands at a height of more than 2500 feet above the sea level near Vagamon hill range. This place can be reached via Vagamon which is well connected with Kottayam as well as Idukki. The Thangal para is a unique rock formation on top of a rocky hill which has some devotional and spiritual significance among devotees. It is believed that Sheikh Fariduddin, a Sufi saint from Afghanistan had lived and died here 800 years back. There is a huge spherical rock formation on top of the hill which the devotees believe that the saint was using for grinding Pan. After the death of the saint the rock started growing enormously and the tomb of the saint lies right in front of the huge rock.
Though it was done along with the Yenthayar – Thoniyamkadu – Kolahalamedu trekking I am updating this separately to cut short the content and for ease of reading. After the trekking I came out of the grass lands of the final stretch of the trek and entered into the Kolahalamedu road. I took rest there for 1 hour and it was then I thought of the possibility of going up the hill and paying a visit to Thangal para. It could be a 400 foot high from the plains of Kolahalamedu. An average healthy person can walk up the hill without much stress.
The rocky terrain in is not that slippery in dry seasons and in Monsoon it is advised to have an extra care as it may tend to sip. Kolahalamedu and Thangal para is notorious for wind blowing in above average speed and hence those who climb up are advised not to go to the edges. Falling from the edges may turn fatal. There are no security measures there.
The bottom of the rocky hill is having a small masjid and prayer centre and a well. From the Masjid one can walk up the mountain in 15-20 minutes. The way is clearly marked in the rock and there is hardly any chance to get lost. I could complete the trekking in 30 minutes uphill and down. The view from the top is good. We can see the entire stretch of mountains from the top of the hills left side is a steep falls and right side is tea plantation. We can see the resort from the top of the hill which is a good view for visitors. Altogether Thangal para is worth a visit if you visit Vagamon or nearby places. The place is well kept and clean. An ideal place to spend a day or a few hours.
